Why are people with SGS more susceptible to infections?

We are excited to be supporting a new immunology research project led by Dr Sarah Potter and Dr Artem Barski at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Many individuals with SGS experience frequent or severe infections, particularly affecting the respiratory and urinary tracts, but we still understand very little about why this happens. The researchers will study blood samples donated by individuals with SGS to look in detail at how their immune cells develop, behave and respond, and whether there are differences that could help explain this increased susceptibility to infection. This is an important first step towards understanding the immune system in SGS and, ultimately, whether this knowledge could help us find better ways to prevent and manage infections in the future.
